Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger has apologised for shoving Jose Mourinho last weekend but insists the Chelsea manager provoked him.
The pair’s bitter rivalry became physical during Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge when they clashed on the touchline following a foul from Gary Cahill on Alexis Sanchez.
Wenger, talking to French television show Téléfoot, said: “They gave too much importance to this story. In hindsight I think I should not have reacted at all, it’s not a way to behave on a football field.
“I always regret any signs of violence and I apologise, but that’s a part of games where everything is manic. And then we have quite a substantial past. Did Mourinho provoke me? That is how I felt. I did not enter Chelsea’s technical area.”
Wenger also reiterated that he has no regrets about opting against re-signing Cesc Fabregas, despite the Spaniard’s majestic start to the season with the Blues.
“I don’t regret not taking Cesc because we already had a lot of creative players in our midfield,” Wenger told beIN Sports.
Chelsea are top of the Premier League table after winning six of their opening seven games, but Wenger is confident their form will dip.
“Chelsea will also have a difficult period [in the season],” he said. “Our schedule was extremely difficult and I have the belief that we can close the gap to them.”
