Wayne Rooney could replace Robin van Persie in the Manchester United team against rivals Manchester City on Sunday, reports the Daily Mail.
Rooney has been suspended for United’s last three games after being shown a straight red card in the 2-1 win against West Ham, but the captain is eligible for selection again, and Louis Van Gaal has told him he will start against City. He has scored three goals and registered two assists in six league appearances this season.
The 29-year-old had been playing in the number ten role before his suspension, but Robin van Persie could make way for him up front after a number of quiet displays.

Van Persie scored a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea, but his overall game has been disappointing so far this season. He knows Louis van Gaal very well from their time working together for the Netherlands national team, though the manager’s presence at Old Trafford has not brought out the best in Van Persie as expected.
City are currently third in the table, four points ahead of United, though the defending champions have failed to win in their last three fixtures.
Rooney has a chance conversion rate of 25% in the Premier League this season.
