Arsenal may have won against Anderlecht in Belgium in the Champions League on Wednesday, but manager Arsene Wenger has still come under fire.
The Gunners scored two late goals to win the Group D clash 2-1 in Brussels and were far more convincing in the 90 minutes.
It was yet another disappointing performance from the North London club, who have fallen 11 points off the pace already in the Premier League.
Wenger has been in charge of Arsenal since 1996, but many fans want someone else to take over. There have been suggestions that the 65-year-old just cannot do it anymore at the Emirates Stadium, with calls for a younger manager quite rife.
However, former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson, who played under Wenger, believes that the Frenchman is not the main problem at the club.
‘I’ve worked under Arsene and I think he’s top drawer’, the former England international told Sky Sports. ‘If he left Arsenal tomorrow, every football team in the world would want him in charge.
‘I don’t see that the problem is the manager, I just think they need to start spending money. It’s like Arsene feels it’s his money and his responsibility to look after the club.
‘No, spend the money, go out and get a holding midfield player and a world-class centre-half. Then Arsenal will be three-quarters of the way there to being a very, very good football team’.
Wenger has often been accused of not spending enough money, and indeed that is a key reason why Arsenal are not among the truly elite clubs in Europe.
Arsenal have never won the Champions League and are now pretty much an also-ran in the competition. The last time they clinched the Premier League title was in 2004, and they have struggled to maintain the challenge over the course of the season year after year.
