Arsenal and Manchester United could be set to miss out on a January move for William Carvalho with Sporting Lisbon keen to get the in-demand midfielder to sign a new contract.
Both Premier League clubs were linked with the Portuguese international over the summer, with the Gunners reportedly having a last-gasp bid of Joel Campbell-plus-£13m turned down on transfer deadline day.
And any hopes retained by either Arsene Wenger or Louis van Gaal of snapping up the 22-year-old in the January transfer window or next summer could be dashed, with Sporting determined to tie him down to a long-term, lucrative deal as they attempt to fend off suitors.
