RIO FERDINAND has revealed how Robin Van Persie was deeply affected by Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to step down as Manchester United boss.
By: Ben Jefferson
Ferguson retired in May 2013 after 26 years in charge at Old Trafford, the decision coming just a year after Van Persie joined in a £24m deal from Arsenal.
The Scot - and his title-winning credentials - were one of the main reasons Van Persie was persuaded to make the switch and Ferdinand says the Dutchman took the news of Ferguson's decision hard.
He told MUTV: "It took the wind out of everyone's sails. It gave us an extra push to go and win and be successful in that last season.
"Everyone was really appreciative for what he'd done for our careers.
"The person it hit more than anyone was Robin. He'd come the year before, tasted that success and wanted more.
"Visually you could see it hit him harder than anyone else at the time."
Van Persie is now looking to get things back on track with another familiar face in charge, after seeing former Dutch boss Louis Van Gaal become the new manager of the Red Devils this summer.
