Jack Wilshere has backed Danny Welbeck to shine for Arsenal after a “fantastic” performance on his debut in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City.
The former Manchester United striker cut a hard-working figure on his Gunners bow and saw one chipped effort come back off the post in the first half.
Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez netted Arsenal’s goals in the Emirates clash, but the former was impressed by Welbeck’s efforts up front.
“He was fantastic,” Wilshere said. “Unfortunately in the first half his little chip didn’t go in but he was fantastic, and he showed great work rate.
“He was closing the centre backs down, he was chasing back and he was quality on the ball as well so I am sure there is more to come from him.”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger added: “He did well. I believe that he needs to develop his link play with our players but that is a bit normal.
“It’s sad that he couldn’t take his chance but overall every time he had an opportunity to find some space he looked dangerous.
“There are some things to work on with him to integrate him well into our game but I’m happy with his first game.”
